Here is the explanation:

The motor heating switch (quick warm-up switch) operates a kind of damper in the exhaust pipe, located just after the turbocharger. Closing the damper causes a restriction in the exhaust pipe, making the engine work harder and so the engine will heat up more quickly in cold weather. There is also a temperature switch in the circuit, which acts as a kind of over-ride, so that the damper will automatically open again, once the engine warms up and reaches a certain temperature. In this case, the switch will stay depressed but the light will go off. The green light is an indication of whether the damper is open or closed : light on - damper is closed, light off - damper is open. When the damper is closed, you might hear a slight change in engine / exhaust note.

Note that the damper itself will only operate when the air temperature is quite cold, so if you press the switch when it is warm (ie above the set temperature), the light will not illuminate and nothing will happen. Also, the damper does not close so much that it blocks the exhaust pipe completely, just enough to cause a restiction.

The light goes out after say 5 miles / 8 kms, but the distance will depend on how cold it is.

I have heard reports of the damper sometimes sticking in the closed position, especially if it is only used very rarely.

If you look just below the turbocharger, you will see the actuator, and the actuating rod approx 5 mm diameter which connects to the damper. The rod runs horizontally to the damper which is not visible (hidden by turbo heat shield). Sorry the picture is not sharply focussed, but now you know where to look - I think you will be able to spot it !

If you are operating this feature, and the weather is cold enough for the damper to operate, the rod will look shiny if it is working correctly.
