It has nothing to do with co emissions.
In order to understand why this idiocy exists we need to understand where it comes from: CAFE standards.
CAFE stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy
Its a mandate of the US government and currently is at 27 miles per gallon.Failure to meet the standard means millions in fines.
Which means, Any manufacturer MUST average 27 MPG among its SOLD vehicle line up so for example lets take Ford, for every F150 with a V8 they have to sell about 2 Ford fiestas to offset the difference, even if they have to do it at a loss, they will dump the fiestas and the focues and increase the price on the trucks.
, The stop-start "feature" is a no brainer, to the manufacturer, it might increase the MPG of a car by one percent. maybe
However, no one cares about the long term costs, which are beneficial to the manufacturer and bad for the consumer, shorter battery and starter life, who cares?its not going to fail in the warranty period anyway.
so the starter will cost 3 times as much...who cares?
Just as long as we can get the fiesta to certify at 1/2 of a MPG better....
