The mechanical portion theory has been covered

I can give some real life experiance
In the day(many moons ago) I worked on many RX7's...there were 10000's sold in the 80's
The original RX7 was made as competition to the Nissan 280z
it was slightly smaller and much lighter then the z, performance was about equal with the bigest advantage of the instant ability to reach 7000rpm
The 80's cars were powered by a 2 rotor rotary of 1300cc
using a single 4bbl asian carburator, its power was made well above 5000 rpm with no torque(MOMENT) to speak of
The major problems with the motor were very high apetite for gasoline (it was equal to a 3 liter 6 cyl in that regard)
There was a VERY short engine life, they usualy lasted 70000 miles (110000km)
There were big problems with oil consumption, they whould burn more then a quart(almost a liter) every 700 miles by the time 50000 miles was reached.
Overheating the engine(even mildly) or running it out of oil(usualy dou to the high oil consumption) means the death of the engine, the apex seals(rings) was prone to wear, if the rotor housing (cylinder walls) were scored, the engine was gone. rebulding it was next to imposable and there was only one company in the US that specialied in overhauls with good results, needless to say....it was very expensive
you could have bought another RX7 for half of what a rebuilt engine whould cost (all this is relevent to the 80's and 90's cars)

Today Mazda sells the RX8, using a "next generation rotary" turbo and non turbo
still using the same design but its supposed to be much improved, I dont know about the dependability...only time will tell
