מה זה ניקסיל? (בהקשר של מנוע ג'יפ 4.0L)
As we can't seem to get an answer on nikasil from the experts
I decided to write my own article on the subject
Nikasil is a registered trade mark of Mahle (of Germany)
The name for the proccess is:
electrodeposited oleophilic nickel matrix silicon carbide coating
It was introduced in 1967 for the rotary engine in the NSU ro80
(later the Wenkel design was sold to Mazda)
It allowed the rotors to work against the aluminium housing
Strangly, the technology has been used by Raynolds Aluminium of Richmond Virginia, a GM supplier that produced the Can Am racing Chevy 427(all aluminum, code name:ZL1) engines in 1966 thru 1971
and the fabled Chevy Vega 4 cylinder thru 1974.
Nikasil allowed doing away with cast iron liners on alum blocks, allowing a larger bore, tighter clearences and better better heat conductivi
The price? reletivly short engine life as the imbeded silicone compound wears much faster then cast iron.
Automotive companies that used the Nikasil proccess include
Ferrari,Porsche,BMW,Jaguar,Mazerati(bitu rbu)
and a bunch of Motorcycle engines by both Japanese and Europene companies(where I learned all about the wonderfull proccess)
The proccess can be used STRICTLY on aluminium]
and the pistons have to have a special iron coating(like anodizing)
There is lots more info on the subject to anyone who is interested on looking it up.
PS:
For the benefit of those who have no patience reading in English
(and you know who you are)
Some body might want to translate it into Hebrew please.
