Hi -
The factory recommendation - which for future reference in this post I WILL stand by - is GL4 OR GL5 API grade oil for the transmission AND transfer case. The differentials require GL5 ONLY. While many oil companies may CLAIM to be compliant with these standards, we personally have found that 2 lubricants specifically do NOT provide satisfactory long-term performance while still claiming to be compliant to these industry standards. One being Redline MT90 the other being Mobil 1 Synthetic. In the beginning we had high hopes for both of these products feeling that perhaps due to their light viscosity would free up HP while provide superior bearing lubrication however, it did not take long to determine - with more than one test subject - that both the Mobil 1 Synthetic and the MT 90 could not be contained by the rear transmission seal and simply ran out on steep angles. Secondly, transmission bearing life - on more than one occasion was very short lived - yeilding approx. 5000 miles of sustained highway speeds. The transfer case - while it is true it has NO syncros - utilizes basically the same dimension bearings under basically the same stress loads as the transmission - which we have experienced failures using the "cool" light viscosity synthetics. We have since come to the unanimous decision that the Suzuki has made the appropriate recommendation. STANDARD GL4/GL5 gear oil is going to be the best choice for the longevity of your gear box bearings. Anything over negative 4 degrees Farenheight run 80/90. God Forbid - if you live in an area where the temperature is below negative 4 degrees Fareneheight, well 75/90 will be for you.
