Yoav, yes the pictures are from New Zealand, where we are now living.
Asaf, yes, it’s a hi roof (and a big sunroof in it to).
It took me a month to find the right car.
There are plenty of Safari’s around, but 90% of them are automatic :cry: .
Finding a manual gear box Safari was quite difficult. My next demand was that the car would be a non turbo.
I didn’t want the 2.8 liter diesel, as it is known as a trouble maker.
I wanted a 7 seater with the high roof, the 2AC’s and the “cool box” that is a real fridge in the back of the car.
So this safari has it all ( it is the “grand road” model). It also has a LSD diff’ on the back.8-)
All in all it is a very nice car.
Alex, cars are very very cheap here, thanks to the second hand imports from Japan (“jap imports”).
This car cost me about 30,000 shekels. .not $, shekels.

This safari came from Tokyo, where it was used as a town car.
The guy I bought off in N.Z, imported it in 2003 and has been using it since then to go up the mountains skiing ( mount Hut, just out of Christchurch).
The good old land rover was sold to a very lucky bastard, who got it dirt cheap (about half of what I had spent on it in the 12 months I had it). We were not going to sell the land rover because it was not worth our wile to do so, but if we were to move to N.Z we had to. I know it was a big financial loss, but some times you just have to make these decisions. And… what the hell, it’s only money.
Money comes and goes, but the good memories stay.
I will post some more pics, the moment I do some offroading with it.

Well, if you are not as picky as I am, you could get a good Safari for even 15,000 shekels or less

A Mitsubishi pajero, that in Israel is considered a good car, is considered a crappie car here, and people can’t sell them, you could buy a good, long, top end trim level, 7 seater, 1997 pajero, 2.8 t”d auto gear, for around 10,000-20,000 shekels!

Asaf, i think for the first time ever, i am going to say that you are wrong.
i think you need to come back for another visit and take a second good look.
except a desert, there is any kind of train you could think of, including technical rock routs.
for the two days i have the Safari, and just around my area (Kaikoura) i have done some interesting tracks.
next time i will take some pic's to refresh your memory.
apart from that, there are some cross country - trans alpine off road tracks, that are amazing and very difficult.
i hope to join a group and go on one of them next winter.
Alon, at the moment the Safari is going to stay standard ( to much spending lately). in the far (far, far) future, i am intending on a slight lift, 33' inch tyres and a rear diff' lock. and yes, had a look under the car, the rear suspension is very impressive.

בחודשים האחרונים הצלחת לגרום לשני תל אביבים עם סמוראי להיות ירוקים מקנאה, ולהטביע 2 מקלדות בשלוליות ריר בלתי נשלט:
1. פעם ראשונה עם הדיפנדר שדיגמתם. ישבנו מול המסך וריירנו שעות.
2. פעם שניה עם המעבר ל NZ. היינו שם ב 95 ואנחנו רוצים גם!:mrgreen:

no, the 24 V system is for starting only, all the other systems are 12 V, after all it is a 4,200 engine, a bit like you trucks back home

after a few days with the safari, and talking to the local 4X4 guys, i can safely say, that with out a major gear box ratio change, the safari will not hold 35' tyres ( actually, not even 33'). the highest you can go with the original gear ratio, would be 32'.
yes, it is a 4,200 c"c, but there is no turbo. it is an under powered car (engine wise, not component wise).
the components (brakes, drive shafts etc'...) would take almost any abuse, but the engine is just to weak.
the 2.5 liter t"d of the land rover feels stronger (TD5, not the TDI 300).
if you put big wheels on, you can forget from the 5th gear.

טוב, עידכונים.
עוד מעט שנתיים עם הרכב, אז מה היה לנו?
30,000 ק"מ רובם בכביש, הרבה בדרכי עפר ומעט בשטח טכני אמיתי.
6 טיפולים - כל 5,000 ק"מ החלפת שמן, כשבכל טיפול שני (דהיינו כל 10,000 ק"מ) מוחלפים גם מסנני השמן - כן מסננים, כי יש שניים.
צינור בלימה קדמי ימני התייבש ונסדק - הוחלף בעלות של $40 (כ-120 ש"ח).
קליפר אחורי שמאלי נתפס בעקבות שחיה בנחלים (אצות שלא נוקו - הכל באשמתי), קיט שיפוץ עלה כ-$25 (כ-75 ש"ח).
ו... זהו!(טפו...טפו...טפו).
שיפורים?
הותקן כיסא תינוק שיאכלס את הבן הבכור שלנו שנולד לפני חודש :D ;) .
חוץ מזה, לא נעשה שום שיפור מהותי. כשרכשתי את הרכב קיבלתי איתו עוד סט של 4 צמיגי שטח (MT)על חישוקי מתכת, אז כרגע הרכב על צמיגי MT עם חישוקי מתכת ואילו חישוקי הסגסוגת עם צמיגי ה-AT (כמעט גמורים) יושבים במחסן. אני מניח שבשנה הקרובה אחסל את צמיגי הMT (קומוהו - סבירים, במיוחד בהתחשב שקיבלתי אותם בחינם ;) ) ואז אחזור לצמיגים שהיו לי על הדיפנדר (Good Year MTR).
עדיין בתיכנון להגביה את הרכב מעט ולשים צמיגי 33', אבל, כמו שאמרתי זה יקח עוד זמן.
צמיגי 35' אני לא מתכוון להרכיב (אגב, זה חוקי לחלוטין), פשוט כי הרכב (המנוע, לא המכלולים, אלו לוקחים צמיגים עד 38', ללא שום חיזוקים מלבד שינוי יחסי העברה, כבר אמרתי שהרכב הזה נבנה ב"אובר-קיל" מטורף?) חלש מידי ואני לא מתכוון לשפר את המנוע בשום אופן.
החלטתי שאם אגיע לשלב בו ארצה להרכיב צמיגי 35', אמכור את הרכב ואקנה פטרול חדש יותר, מהדגם שנמכר בארץ, אבל עם מנוע 4,200 דיזל ולא ה-3,000 דיזל שנמכר בארץ.

עכשיו שתבינו, לא צריך להיות חוליגן על הכביש בשביל להינות מהרכב. בעבור 300 ש"ח ליום אפשר להנות על מסלול מרוץ אמיתי, חוויה מדהימה.
בקיצור, יש גם הנאה באספלט ולא רק רק בשטח.
