I have been through Africa in 1999, crossing 12 countries with South African made HiLux 4x4. It was an amazing trip, best I have done so far. You have to ask yourself a few questions: How long is your time frame, what is your focus (Game resorts, cultures, 4WDriving etc..) are you inteding visiting as many countries or rather focus on 2-3 countries? would you a single vehicle or more than that?
We started in Jo'Berg, crossed the Kalahary desert and proceeded to Mid-Africa, than returned back to South Aftrica. The trip required lots of paperwork - Visa (espcially if you are on Israeli passport) nature resorts passes that had to be booked and paid in Advance, and yet we still had to pay 'Bakshish' along the way - what can you do. The vehicles were hired, a good thing of your trip is not as long and you do not have time to fiddle around with old vehicles. I recommand Toyta in Africa at all times and every place, Land Rover is an option but do not expect same level of reliabiliy and parts availibility.
As far as 4WDriving is concerned, Africa is not that hard - tha part I have been to, anyway. Lots of Dune driving and some river crossings, nothing too challenging.
Well that's it for now, if you can provide more details provide I may be able to advise you
Cheers .
