The aftermarket axle requirement also extends to installing a C-clip eliminator kit in any rearend that uses a C-clip to retain the rear axle, such as the GM 10- and 12-bolts and the Ford 8.8-inch rearends.

http://www.offroadlist.com/faq1.htmlIn the rear, on most vehicles (especially half ton or less), you have
semi-floating axles. Sometimes there is a C-clip at the differential that keeps
the load from being put on the axle at the differential. These axles generally
do not have any hub whatsoever in the wheel. If the axle is a C-clip axle and
the axle breaks, the wheel will fall off. If the axle doesn't have a C-clip
(like most axles), the axle is held in place basically by the four bolts on the
brake backing plate. This plate holds the bearings and races in place so that
if the axle breaks, the wheel will PROBABLY not come out.
, , ...all Rover 4x4's have full-floaters.
They better have, since the C-clip concept means loosing a wheel when
the shaft breaks.
http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/tlc_axle.htmThe exit to Route 66 west is a long, sweeping 2 lane left exit that
jaunts and curves over to the northbound lane of Route 66 from the inner
loop (northbound) of 495.
As we exited and started up the incline of the exit, we began a long
left turn. Mind you, we were at highway speeds in my sprung over, 36"
TSL shod FJ60.
THUNK, grrrrrr grrrrrr.
Rob, to Rob D.: Hmm. That's a funny noise.
Rob D., ashen: mmm hmmm.
WHAM! (sounds of grinding. Rear end of truck dramatically lower. Rob
sees sky. Notes DS rear tire with axle attached in rear view mirror
warbling crazily behind him. )
At this point, my breakfast almost made a speedy exit.
I will mention that it was MONSOONING. Pouring rain. Which is why we
were in the 60 in the first place.
Perfect.
Realizing the seriousness of my situation and knowing exactly what had
happened, I immediately call AAA for a Flat-bed.
