In 2019, the Jimny came 3rd in the world for best designed car. I have been listing all the key design features that I have noticed, and love, but would like to hear more here are some examples
1. Gen 4 went back to a mechanic transfer knob, as gen 3 was electric and mud could prevent it from working.
2. The antenna is placed on the side so you can centre items like surfboards on roof racks without hitting the antenna.
3. The rear lights were put below the rear door, so the door could be made wider than the previous generation.
4. The electric window switches are ribbed underneath so you can feel in the dark if you have the right switch or not.
5. The centre air con button (of the three) doesnt do anything except display, because when manuals shift into 3rd, sometimes your hand will hit that centre knob if you drive/shift with an open palm.
6. The fuel cap is on the drivers side, because if you need to pull over off roading, you can pull over safely to the left of the dirt road, and still access the tank. (Aus/Uk).
7. The front bumper is deliberately soft to absorb scrapes.
8. All the brake lines are visible in the wheel arches so you can see if there is damage while off roading rather than be covered up like modern cars/4wds.
9. All the function buttons are centralised for 4wding eg. No window switches for passenger sides.
10. The touch screen can be used with work gloves on.
11. The accelerator, brake, and clutch pedals are deliberately narrow, so you can wear work boots and not interfere with other pedals.
So there's a South African training presentation floating around from the release of the new Jimny that goes through a lot of these points. Some of the other things they incorporated
- Design elements from each of the previous generations. Headlight and indicator placement in the grille is from the original. The little bumps in the scuttle panel plates just behind the rear of the bonnet is from the 2nd gen, as is the tailight design, and the 5 vertical elements of the grille is from gen 3.
- Upright windscreen is supposedly to reduce direct sunlight onto the driver.
- Lil dips in the top of the doors give a bit more window room for visibility to the mirror
- Flat roof and bonnet for easier brushing off of snow
- Gutters were incorporated for both wider loads on roof racks and also to better stop you getting wet when you get out when it's raining.
- M8 threads into dashboard and M6 points along under windows and tiedown points in back footwell and rear door opening for safer tiedown options
- Dash patterning is based off the grips on camera lenses (no joke!) but also to reduce glare and stains
- Narrower shoulder area on the seats to allow for better looking backwards offroad or reversing
- Vertical rear pillars to allow wider loads (this is why they went away from the pillar mounted taillights of the gen3).
